STEP 03 · TRADE-OFFS · WHAT AM I BUYING?

03 / 06

Every yes is a no to something else.

Trade-offs aren't a sign of scarcity. They're a sign you've grown up about how choices actually work.

  1. Trade-offs
Two paths of light and shadow crossing on a table, a quiet study in trade-offs

Every meaningful decision purchases one future instead of another. Time, money, energy, attention and optionality are finite, so the exchange is always happening — whether or not you look at it.

Most of us only ask the first half of the question: what am I giving up? That's the half that stings, so it's the half we avoid. But it's incomplete on its own.

Ask the second half too: what future am I buying? A yes with a clear purchase behind it feels different from a yes you talked yourself into. Naming both sides doesn't make the decision harder. It makes it honest — and honest decisions are the only kind you can defend to yourself six months from now.

Trade-offs aren't evidence that something has gone wrong. They're how choices work.

THE INSIGHT

Every yes is a no to something else. Ask what future you're buying, not just what you're giving up.

Naming both sides doesn't make the decision harder. It makes it honest.

THE FRAMEWORK

MoSCoW: sorting competing yeses

Must, Should, Could, Won't gives you language for the yeses you are weighing right now, and surfaces the invisible no hiding behind each one.
