STEP 04 · COST OF DELAY · DOES THIS MATTER NOW?

04 / 06

Waiting is a choice too.

Something can matter without needing to happen now. This step is about telling those two apart.

  1. Cost of Delay

You've named the direction, tested whether something belongs, and seen what it costs. There's one question left: does it matter now?

Delay isn't automatically bad. Sometimes you choose to wait and accept the consequences. Sometimes a delay arrives uninvited and changes the plan. The goal was never to avoid delay at all costs. The goal is to understand what waiting costs, and choose it on purpose.

THE PRINCIPLE

The goal isn't to protect the plan. It's to protect the outcome.

WHEN DELAY ARRIVES UNINVITED

01

EXPECT IT

Delay is normal, not a failure.

02

DON'T PANIC

Nothing useful happens in panic.

03

CALCULATE THE COST

Name what waiting actually changes.

04

REDESIGN

Adjust the plan to protect the outcome.

A plan is a decision made with the information you had then. When the information changes, you get to decide again.

THE FRAMEWORK

MoSCoW: what a Must really means

Timing is what separates a Must from a Should. The framework shows how to test whether something is genuinely due now, or just loud.
